Everyone wants to be an It Girl. Everyone wants to be desired or admired. Even if they don’t admit it. It’s human nature to want to be adored.
I’ve always been curious about “it girls”. I have the same questions as anyone else would. What makes an It Girl? What makes people admire It Girls? Can you even become an It Girl? Or is it just genetics?
Also, just to clarify, I’m talking about actual famous it girls that are mostly fashion related, not just an actress with a TV show on HBO. ‘It Girls’, to me, are girls who are admired by the general public and fashion community.
I think everyone always wants to see the ‘It Girl’ lifestyle through rose-colored glasses. I think that’s the beauty of an ‘It Girl’. Everyone overly glamorizes it, even the actual it girl.
The origin of its girl started with actress Clara Bow in the 1920’s. Clara Bow was a silent film actress but did successfully transitioned to talkies. She captured worldwide success when she played a shop-girl in the film ‘It.’ Which later got her the nickname “The It Girl.”
But now writer William Donaldson has stated that the term ‘It Girl’ is now being applied to describe “a young woman of noticeable ‘sex appeal’ who occupied herself by shoe shopping and party-going.”
To be fair, he comes off really condescending there, but i’m gonna hope for his sake that they took him out of context.
Anyways, I’ve always wondered what made an ‘It Girl’ different from a girl. What was ‘it’? What qualities did Alexa Chung possess to make us all cut our own bangs in 2012? From what I could tell, being an It Girl is like having a spark in your eye. It’s nothing you did or do, just how you carry yourself.
Elinor Glyn, the writer of the screenplay for ‘It,’ has said “with ‘it’, you win all men if you are a woman and all woman if you are a man. ‘It’ can be a state of mind as well as a physical attraction.” I do really agree with that quote. I think some people are born unbelievable charming and beautiful with a sprinkle of good taste in clothes. Others, grow into their it factor, They might wear those “infinity” crop tops with their Forever 21 skirts at first, but by senior year they are in Valentino, turning heads.
An ‘It Girl’ is all about showcasing unique parts of yourself off like a designer purse. People want to admire things they don’t have. Whether that be a cool style like Alexa Chung or an interesting career like Edie Sedgwick. Or be born rich, that works too.
Which is a very apparent factor in current It Girls. Surprise, 90% of them were born rich. Not to say that it makes them untalented or undeserving, but being born rich or famous is like a default charm to the general public. It doesn’t really count, but in this case, it will.
The modern day It Girls in question are Lily-Rose Depp, Kendall Jenner, Gigi Hadid, Bella Hadid, Kaia Gerber, Alexa Chung. Elsa Hosk, and Imaan Hammam.
Please don’t hate me if I forgot some names.
I think all of those girls kinda have the ‘It Girl’ traits. They have something that would cause may to admire and to strive to have or be. For some, it’s their born celebrity status, charm, talent, or beauty.
Which means —in some ways— we all kinda have it girl potential. It’s just up to us whether or not we want to showcase it. So, all my future it girls, are you ready?
