Fashion is known to be used as a visual means of expression for most, if not all artists. Specifically pop singers. Which means most pop singers have killer styles, and Kim Petras certainly does follow this legacy.
For those of you who don’t know, Kim Petras is a German singer that’s based in California. She has dance-pop styled songs such as ‘Don’t Want It At All’ and ‘Heart To Break.’ She has collaborated with artists like Lil Aaron and SOPHIE. She also joined Troye Sivan’s tour in 2018.
While this ‘blog’ isn’t necessarily music based and nor do I think it will ever be, I do think Kim Petras is a rising star in music. Since fashion and pop culture is a heavily intertwined community, Kim Petras style needs to be discussed. That and I just needed an excuse to talk about Kim Petras.
I’m obsessed with her style. Most pop girls, of this generation, have such a boring sense of style whether on stage or off. Which is unfortunate because, in my unauthorized opinion, a collection of iconic, memorable outfits does make a great match to an iconic discography. For example, what would the ‘…Baby One More Time’ music video be without the schoolgirl uniform? Or what would the 42nd Grammy Awards be without Jennifer Lopez in that green Versace dress? So, it is nice to see rising stars like Kim Petras realize the importance of fashion in a performers career.
Clearly, I’m not the only one who loves Kim’s style too. She has a fan account named @kimpetrascloset that’s dedicated to her style, which has over 1,500 followers. Plus, the fashion community has taken a liking to her too. She’s already been invited to New York Fashion Week in 2018.
Now, a deep dive on her style inspirations.
From what I could tell, Kim Petras has a very drastic yet glamorous style. Like if the cast of the original 80’s Dynasty and Prince had style baby, they would name it Kim Petras. It’s very intriguing and exciting. In other words, iconic.
As for inspirations, she told Page Six in 2018 “I’m really obsessed with classic movie characters. Dr. Frank N Furter from ‘Rocky Horror Show’, Veruca Salt, ‘How to Marry a Millionaire’ era, Marilyn Monroe. And ‘The First Wives Club’… that’s a big one.”
She also told Bright Young Things,”..I’m really inspired by Audrey Hepburn and Rihanna and Billy Idol, Cyndi Lauper. I follow style a lot and think about it a lot. I just love dressing up differently depending on my mood. I think fashion is another escapism thing where you can create a fantasy, and I’m so into that.”
When you look at her style. those references make so much sense.
What are her favorite brands? Glad you asked. She told Opening Ceremony, “I Love Marc Jacobs, Giambattista Valli, Alexander Vauthier, Daisy Daisy, Adam Selman, Dior in the 2000’s, of course Buffalo’s and of course Opening Ceremony!”
I love Kim Petras and she’s a fashion icon. Stream her whole discography.
In all seriousness, I really do love Kim Petras, and I think it’s important to pay attention to new rising artists since they (unfortunately or not) have a lot of influence on mainstream fashion.
Also, I’m really sorry the past two posts have been really short or boring. It’s testing season and I’m trying not to fail. However, once all of that blows over Girl In Couture will be fully back.
